Caffé Gelato Restaurant and Catering now celebrates its 13th anniversary. Expanded and renovated in 2008, the restaurant includes a 1,500 bottle wine cellar with over 100 varietals and a vibrant 10-seat granite top bar. The atmosphere is warm and inviting with amber lighting, candles and private dining spaces for special parties. Caffé Gelato hosts luncheons, rehearsal dinners, wedding receptions and business events. In season, outside dining is available on the covered porch overlooking Main Street. Caffé Gelato is located walking distance from the University of Delaware.
Caffé Gelato serves lunch and dinner and an a la carte brunch. We like to prepare meals with flavors that are not easily duplicated by our customers at home. Favorites on the menu include Chef Danny Profita’s rosemary roasted pork tenderloin served with mushroom risotto and the grilled filet mignon with green peppercorn and roasted shallot demi-glace. Danny has just introduced his Colorado roasted rack of lamb served with mint pesto and features 3-4 seafood entrees each night on the menu, i.e. pan seared scallops, local line-caught rockfish, Martha’s Vineyard fluke and wild salmon. For desert, try the homemade French crepes spread with nutella and accompanied with bacio gelato or a warm mixed berry or peach cobler served with vanilla bean gelato. At brunch, try the crème brulee French toast or the “eggs mignon”.
All gelato is homemade on the premises. There are 24 flavors daily including the featured gelato of the month.
After opening in April 2000, Caffé Gelato was awarded “Delaware’s Best New Restaurant” by Delaware Today Magazine, and in 2010, Delaware Today awarded Caffé Gelato “Best Outdoor Dining“, “Best Wine List“, “Newark’s Best Restaurant“, “Most Romantic Atmosphere” and “Best Lunch“. The restaurant has earned the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence award annually since 2005, and “Delaware’s Best Desserts” since 2008.
Jan Shepard from the Boston Globe wrote in a travel piece for the newspaper, “[Caffé Gelato] goes to the head of the class for a return visit.” The Wilmington News Journal writes “Reasonably priced and inventive… well-crafted desserts…solid specials.” And, the Washington Post wrote, “… We headed for a late dinner at trendy Caffé Gelato.. Our sidewalk table was a prime people-watching post…[In Newark] the air positively vibrates with energy.” Caffé Gelato was also featured on ABC’s Good Morning America, NBC’s Ten at Ten, CBS Eye Witness News, and Comcast’s CN8 Your Morning.
Restaurant owner Ryan German was inspired to open Caffé Gelato while studying abroad in Spain and Italy during college. “I really enjoyed traveling in Europe and I learned a lot about the regional cuisines. My favorite foods were those of Northern Italy and I learned how to make gelato from the Artisans in Porto Santo Stefano, Italy. “With our 2008 renovation, customers can have a remarkable dining experience. They can visit the bar for happy hour or before their meal, enjoy foods with excellent flavors and relax in a comfortable atmosphere.” Guests’ favorite gelato flavors are white-chocolate macadamia nut, tiramisu, chocolate hazelnut, mokka cappuccino and coconut. The best selling childrens’ flavors are mint chocolate chip and classic vanilla bean. Seasonal flavors like pumpkin pie, cinnamon and peppermint stick are popular during the winter holiday season.
